Essay 7 - Rice (My contribution to the school)

개인적으로 무척 쓰기 힘들었던 에세이다.
Michigan 에세이랑 좀 합쳐서 썼다.

The quality of Rice's academic life and the Residential College System is heavily influenced by the unique life experiences and cultural traditions each student brings. What perspective do you feel that you will contribute to life at Rice? (no limit in words)

I am a student from South Korea who has attended a high school that emphasizes Korean traditions and cultures which even many Koreans forgot. I will be able to contribute to Rice University by enriching the cultural diversity of Rice community.

In school, my friends and I have been wearing traditional clothes for past three years. We bow to seniors and teachers every time we meet them, as a show of respect. In freshman and sophomore year, we trained ourselves physically and mentally through practicing either Taekwondo or Kendo. Every year, the whole school tributes to Sun Shin Lee, the great Korean naval general with courage and integrity. When I enter Minjok Education Center next to our dormitory, I feel like entering a miniature size Gyeongbokgung, Choson Dynasty palace in Seoul.

Above all, learning daegeum, a Korean traditional woodwind which you play horizontally like a flute, has been a most valuable cultural experience for me in high school years. I discovered an aspect of Korean root, harmonizing with nature. My music teacher, Mr. Kim, told us to play daegeum as if the music is sea, grand and majestic. When playing very high notes, I am to be a snake catching the prey in split seconds (Most daegeum music does not contain extensively long high notes but only brief ones). Moreover, in order to make vibrating sound (a skill similar to tonguing) I move my arms up and down as if I am a crane flapping its wings to rise. Clarinet, which I had learned for more than five years, gives me an image of playing the instrument at the big concert hall on refined stage while daegeum gives me an image of playing the music outside in nature sitting on a rock with the beautiful mountain behind me.

I will spread my Korean culture and give new insights to Rice students; I hope to help them expand their perspectives toward the world which I believe is essential to become global leaders. Perhaps, I will make a daegeum club and give chances to students to try learning daegeum and experience Korean culture more directly.
